Michael Mendoza, Tenor Sax
Sax player Mike Mendoza brings rich and varied musical experience to the Houserockers. Having played the sax since he was 12, he attended Abraham Lincoln High School (San Jose, Ca.), where he played in the marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, and jazz quintet. While in high school, he was first chair alto sax in the Santa Clara County Honor Band for two years in a row and also played lead alto with the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Festival Symphonic Band. He was named Outstanding Instrumentalist his junior and senior years in high school, and was awarded the Semper Fidelis Award for musical excellence. In 1995 and 1996, he played lead alto with the Santa Clara University Jazz Ensemble, where he had the opportunity to perform with Tony Williams and Greg Bissionette as a part of the university's Spring Jazz Concert. At De Anza College, Mike performed with the De Anza College Jazz Ensemble, and won Outstanding Soloist at the American River College Jazz Festival in 1998. He played three seasons in Great America's Way Too Much TV Band, and an R&B/soul show called Club Paramount. Currently, Mike plays and Gigss with the jazz/swing band Hot Town Jubilee, and performs with the Musician's Warehouse Big Band, as well as the JT Horns.
